Labor Scholarship

Thinking about advancing your knowledge about labor issues and expanding your skills of labor leadership? Our union provides a great opportunity to help members return to school and pursue new horizons. Check out the MNA Labor Scholarship, created to help RNs seek further education in the field of Labor Studies/Labor Relations.


Each year, the E & GW Commission awards up to $5,000 to an MNA collective bargaining member or members who meet certain criteria, and plan to use the funding for:

  • Coursework for a certificate in Labor Studies/Labor Relations
  • Credit coursework for a Bachelor’s Degree in Labor Studies/Labor Relations
  • Credit coursework for a Master’s Degree in Labor Studies/Labor Relations

Applications are examined be the E & GW Commission on a first-come, first-served basis if funding is still available.


Awardees will be announced at the Spring meeting of ABUL.

Guidelines

Purpose

The MNA Labor Education Scholarship Program was created to help Registered Nurses seek further education in the field of Labor Studies/Labor Relations.

The MNA Labor Education Scholarship may be used for:

  • Coursework for a certificate in Labor Studies/Labor Relations
  • Credit coursework for a Bachelor’s Degree in Labor Studies/Labor Relations
  • Credit coursework for a Master’s Degree in Labor Studies/Labor Relations

Criteria

Required:

  • Must be a MNA member in good standing (collective bargaining or collective-bargaining eligible)
  • Verification of acceptance into a labor-oriented school/program must be provided

Recommended:

  • At least one year of active service to the local bargaining unit and/or state organization

Restrictions:

  • Members of the Labor Education Scholarship Committee are not eligible to apply

Required Materials

1. Completed and signed Application Form (including a brief   description of the applicant’s current participation in his/her local bargaining unit or state organization and a brief Statement of Purpose describing the applicant’s union leadership goals).

2. Signed recommendation letter from someone in the local or state leadership of your Association.

3. Materials (description, brochure, flyer) of the school/program you wish to attend.

4. Upon completion of the program, scholarship recipients must submit a “Final Report” reviewing the program she/he attended. The final report must also include verification of completion.  (A certificate of completion or a copy of final grades are acceptable forms of verification.)  All monies disbursed through this program must be returned to MNA if the coursework is not completed.

Deadlines

Applications received by January 31 will be reviewed by the E and GW Commission or an E and GW subcommittee.  Applications received after January 31 will be reviewed and funded on a first-come, first-served basis. 

The official Call for Applications will be made to members at the fall ABUL meeting and placed in the post-convention edition of the Accent.

The MNA Labor Scholarship recipients will be announced at the spring ABUL meeting.

Renewal Policy

Members who are awarded the scholarship may reapply in subsequent years by completing all of the application materials.

Award Disbursement

All monetary awards will be dispersed by MNA directly to the school/university upon the receipt of an appropriate invoice.

A total of $5000 in scholarships may be awarded annually and may be awarded to one individual or divided among applicants.  If the cost is less than $5000, the amount awarded will equal the cost of the program.  The MNA Labor Education Scholarship may be used for tuition at a labor-oriented education program only.  It may not be used for books or travel expenses.
